We’ve faced the social juries Vast fathoms of loneliness The unknown depths and heights of love and pain Even when we were never together we were connected From God’s big bang womb we emerged holding hands like children

So, then, how and who are we right now? Meeting each other as though it were the first time? What favorite song shall we sing? Is it possible to discover anew some beautiful secret within each of us? Shall we be trees with the same root system growing for 3000 years before the fire? Shall we be strangers? Shall we house each other’s broken porcelain hearts? Shall we hold hands again? Walk through fields of flowers? Climb mountains? Swim oceans? Shall we?

We can make any universe of this love I’ve been your faithful servant A priest I’ve confessed my sins to you We’ve broken and mended each other’s scarred souls I’ve been fire and you the forest You’ve been rain clouds over my parched soils I’ve been your loyal pet You’ve been my worst enemy I’ve been your unknown benefactor You’ve been my guardian angel I’ve been the inspiration for your art and the source of your confusion We’ve been grammar school girls gossiping, boys fighting on the playground I’ve been the drunk driver You’ve been precious herbs I’ve tended in the garden We’ve watched the sunrise from every longitude and latitude Together we’ve changed the world and found each other even if we died trying We’ve wept in each other’s arms and across the reaches of space and time Together we’ve received the Direct Kiss of God a hundred and forty four times

Praying mantis to dolphins to condors to gorillas to bacteria, snakes and seashell creatures We’ve known each other every way there is to know another so much so We cannot honestly say that you are not me because I am you just as much as I am me You see?
So let’s just pretend
We’ve spent years building secure bridges of trust and dared let each other enter the most vulnerable and tender folds of our beings I’ve been there for you when there was no one else on Earth You’ve brought me back from the edge of forever and into this moment I’ve forsaken every oath, vow, and rule to be waves breaking on your shore You’ve made the journey from hot center of planet to become small sand granules smoothed by my tears
And this is true Please, let’s pretendThat nothing else is true but this
